Risk Assessments for the Healthcare Sector

Water Safety Planning is an essential consideration for any business, commercial or public venue. For the healthcare sector, this is especially important, as individuals may have particularly vulnerable health whilst in your hospital or care facility. When it comes to ensuring the safety, hygiene and compliance of your water system, there are universal legal requirements to fulfil, as well as additional factors for healthcare venues to address.

One of the most important of these is the risk assessment for Legionella disease, pseudomonas bacteria and other common pathogens.

To help you address and meet these, 4i Water Service’s friendly team are on hand and highly experienced in healthcare water systems, including in the carrying out of this important risk assessment.

Know What’s Required

A risk assessment is a legal requirement when carrying out your water safety planning – it’s important that one has not only taken place, but that it is sufficiently in date.

This assessment must be carried out by qualified personnel in order to be valid: it cannot be carried out be a member of your own team unless they have been trained in a fully understanding of and compliance to the relevant safety standards, including BSRIA’s (1999) FMS 4/99, BSRIA’s (2015) BG 57/2015, BS 8580, BS 8580 and HSG274 Part 2 (2014).

For a healthcare facility, the assessment will look for any and all areas of potential risk regarding Legionella, P. aeruginosa and other relevant pathogens, as well as risks that may arise during water storage, maintenance and use.

This evaluation will not only look at your water system itself but also how educated your team are on the risks and safety measures. A full risk assessment will provide insights and evaluation on:

Current in-house policies and procedures
Team governance and accountability
Team education and training
Safe access to equipment
Prevention of unauthorised access to equipment
Scalding risks and the appropriate installation of TMVs
Failure to maintain necessary hot and cold system supply temperatures.
Infrequently used outlets
The unnecessary use of flexible hoses and any containing inappropriate lining materials
Sampling, monitoring and testing programmes that needs to be put in place
Backflow protection
Clinical practice where water may come into contact with patients and their invasive devices
The appropriate cleaning of the environment and equipment
The disposal of blood, body fluids and patients’ wash-water
The maintenance and cleaning of wash-hand basins and associated taps, specialist baths and other water outlets
Suitable sitting and installation of wash-hand basics including the appropriate positioning of soap and antimicrobial hand-rub dispensers
Other devices that increase/decrease the temperature of water (for example, ice-making machines, water chillers) which may not be appropriate where patients are at particular risk such as in augmented care settings.
Engineering assessment of water systems, including appropriate design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and verification of the effectiveness of control measures.

Once potential hazards and hazardous events have been identified, the highlighted risks need to be assessed so priorities for risk management can be established. This looks at both the severity of a potential risk, but also its likelihood.

With this information, you will have sight of the best way forwards to make sure your healthcare building and water systems are safe, and your team’s training is up to date. Don’t just meet compliance today – with the insights from your assessment, you can also safeguard for the future.
